Abstract:
Surgery is a very wide field and the emphasis of
various surgical conditions varies from place to
place depending on the magnitude of the prevalent
conditions.
During my three years training at the Faculty of
Medicine, University of Dar es Salaam, situated at
the National Consultant Hospital - Muhimbili, much
emphasis has been on conditions that are more
prevalent in our environment.
The post graduate is extensively exposed theoretically
and practically to the field of surgery so that he
gains confidence and learns the art of surgery of
the commonest procedures.under the supervision of
his senior colleagues and consultants. This aims
at producing a competen~surgeon who can work

independently upcountry and thereby limiting the
unnecessary referrals to consultant hospitals.
This dissertation consists of 10 different
common surgical conditions fully managed by the
author and studied in detail to warrant presentation.
It is presented in three sections. Section one
consists of five common general surgical conditions,
Section two consists of three common urological
conditions and Section three consists of two common
orthopaedic and trauma conditions.
