Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Cervical cancer is a public health concern in Tanzania. In 2018, Tanzania had
a high mortality rate (42 deaths per 100,000) and the fourth-highest incidence of cervical
cancer in the world with 59.1 new cases per 100,000 women. Screening of cervical cancer
has been proven in developed countries to reduce the incidence and mortality due to cervical
cancer. In Tanzania, there is low uptake of cervical cancer screening which leads to most
women being diagnosed with cervical cancer at an advanced stage hence complicating the
treatment and slowing recovery
Aim of the study: The study explored the perceptions of women of reproductive age on
cervical cancer screening uptake services in Ubungo Municipal in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
Materials and Methods: The study utilized an exploratory qualitative study design. A total
of 16 participants were purposefully recruited in the study. Data was collected by in-depth
interviews from women who had never been screened for cervical cancer. Data was audio
recorded and transcribed verbatim. A thematic approach was used to analyze data.
Results: Four themes surfaced in the understanding of cervical cancer: a general
understanding of cervical cancer, barriers to cervical cancer screening, facilitators for
screening uptake, and recommendations for improving cervical cancer screening services.
The study revealed personal, facility, and national-related factors that hinder women from
getting screening for cervical cancer. Misconceptions and a lack of communal disclosure
also emerged as notable barriers.
Conclusion: This study highlighted significant gaps in participant perception and
misconceptions about cervical cancer screening among women, emphasizing the need for
targeted education and awareness programs. To improve cervical cancer screening uptake
in Tanzania, we recommend enhancing healthcare provider training, increasing the
availability and affordability of screening services, and conducting continuous education
campaigns at community and healthcare facility levels.
