Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background
Global incidences of cervical cancer are continuously on the rise. Experiences of cervical cancer patients vary based on multiple factors such as physical characteristics, cultural, spiritual, and socio-economic inequalities. Despite variance in the patient experiences, there is little information regarding cervical cancer patient experiences in Malawi.
Aim
The purpose of the study was to explore the lived experiences of cervical cancer survivors at the Malawi National Cancer Center (MNCC).
Methods: A qualitative study with a phenomenological design was conducted from March to April 2024 involving 12 cervical cancer survivors. The survivors were those who had a histologically confirmed diagnosis and had at least three months treatment history up to those on follow-up. Purposive sampling was used to collect a sample of cervical cancer survivors. Data collection was done by using a semi-structured interview guide. Survivors were recruited after reviewing the MNCC’s registry and patient records for eligibility. Written consents for participation were obtained from survivors. All of the interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim afterwards. Data was analyzed using manual thematic analysis as inspired by Braun and Clarke.
Results: Four themes and twelve sub themes on experiences of cervical cancer survivors receiving care at the Malawi National cancer Centre were developed following data analysis. The themes were; Intrapersonal experiences where the survivors experienced varied physical, emotional, and financial burdens, Interpersonal experiences where social support varied with some survivors experiencing strengthened relationships while others faced stigma., community experiences where misconceptions and cultural beliefs cause stigma and discrimination causing delayed seeking of care; and institutional factors where survivors reported having varied interactions within the healthcare system
Conclusion: Living with cervical cancer is cumbersome. Survivors’ lives changed after their diagnosis of cervical cancer due to the effects of the disease and its treatment side effects, changed social relationships, community outlook and different treatments from the institutions they seek care from.
